One of the challenges of working with emerging diseases is how little is often known. How do we best implement control programmes when we don’t fully understand the epidemiology of a disease?

One of the main events for the second quarter of the year is the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) General Session, held at the OIE headquarters in Paris.

We pack in a lot of travelling over the year. As well as visiting countries to give advice and guidance on vaccination campaigns and implementation, we also attend conferences and meetings so that we can stay up to date.

The October 2018 edition of Nature caught my eye as the cover talked about coproduction research. Coproduction is an inclusive approach that brings community engagement into research, ensuring stakeholders and scientists work together.

I hope you all had a good summer. It’s been quite wet, here in New Jersey, more than normal, and that had me thinking about how environmental changes lead to diseases shifting from their “normal” geographies.

The second quarter of the year was incredibly busy for us. We attended meetings on rabies, lumpy skin disease (LSD), foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), pestes des petit ruminant (PPR), African swine fever (ASF), and more.

Innovation and the use of technology sees an increase in dog owners attending a vaccination drive. Conferences on rabies control see a developing network working together, and GALVmed looks at how to make a lasting impact in Africa.

As we head into 2018 all of us in Intergovernmental Veterinary Health (IVH) hope that 2017 ended well for you.

Despite the summer break, it’s been a busy time and we have been to a number of meetings around the world.
